Skiving/Roller burnishing
Brief description
Skiving and roller burnishing tools are used for the functional production of inner diameters of cylinder tubes. These combine machining (skiving) and roughness reduction (roller burnishing) in one tool, allowing both processes to be carried out simultaneously. Skiving produces dimensional and shape accuracy, while roller burnishing influences the roughness of the surface directly after machining.
The combination of the two processes has almost completely replaced the former honing process and is typically carried out on deep drilling machines as well as CNC machines.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR COMPONENT:
The combination of skiving and roller burnishing produces dimensionally accurate and smooth inner diameters in an efficient process. For hot-rolled tubes, this combination can also be supplemented by drilling.

How a skiving/roller burnishing process works in detail
Skiving and roller burnishing tools are used for the functional production of internal diameters of cylinder tubes. These combine machining (skiving) and roughness reduction (roller burnishing) in a single tool, allowing both processes to be carried out simultaneously. Skiving produces the dimensional and shape accuracy required for hydraulic cylinders, for example. Low roundness and waviness (IT8) are the main parameters. Roller burnishing influences the roughness of the surface directly after machining. The usual target values here are Ra 0.1µm - 0.3µm | Rz < 1µm.
The combination of the two processes with high machining parameters has almost completely replaced the former honing process, as this procedure is far more economical and faster. The process is typically carried out on so-called deep drilling machines, but also on CNC machines.
The combination of skiving and roller burnishing can be supplemented by an additional process - drilling. This is necessary if hot-rolled pipes are to be processed. In contrast to cold-drawn pipes, these pipes have considerably greater wall thickness fluctuations, so that additional upstream machining is necessary. Due to the modular design, a 2-cavity tool can turn into a 3-cavity combined tool.
ECOROLL's OMEGA system (RDO, RIO) combines skiving and roller burnishing for the production of hydraulic cylinders and cylinder tubes in a single tool. The OMEGA skiving head produces the necessary dimensional and shape accuracy, while the roller burnishing head smoothes the surface. Thanks to the modularity of the OMEGA modular system, customized tools can be configured for all tube qualities and processing lengths.
